Learn about the art of esparto
Paca and Baltasar have spent their entire lives braiding esparto grass, shaping this humble and resilient plant as it has been done in Andalusia for centuries. They hold their workshop in what has been their lifelong home, Casarabonela, one of the beautiful white villages in the province of Málaga, with its whitewashed houses and mountain setting. For half a day, they open the doors to their craft so you can discover it from the inside: not as a spectacle, but as a living tradition worth knowing, feeling, and preserving. What you will experienceGuided by Paca and Baltasar, you will explore the entire esparto grass process, from its origin: - The "harvest" of the esparto in the fields, where the raw material is born. - Its preparation and "cooking," the step that makes it flexible and workable.- The braiding techniques, with which you will discover the countless pieces that can be created with such a natural material. In their workshop, you will experience something more akin to a conversation between generations than a classroom lesson. Paca and Baltasar not only possess a wealth of experience in this rural knowledge, but also a wealth of life experience. Listening to them and spending a day with them is, quite simply, a privilege. Paca, 85, and Baltasar, 87, are the oldest collaborators at Way2Culture and two true celebrities in their field. They have shared their knowledge as speakers at local cultural events and at the La Noria Social Innovation Center, and have even brought esparto grass weaving to television on Canal Sur. They exude pride and passion for what they do, driven by a very clear desire: that this rural knowledge remains alive and is valued.A table for sharing. The morning workshop ends as the best days in an Andalusian village do: around a table. An authentic paella cooked over a wood fire awaits you, accompanied by a glass of local wine and that unhurried atmosphere that encourages cultural exchange and good conversation. AccessibilityWe believe culture is a right, not a privilege. The workshop is not wheelchair accessible, but we can prepare inclusive sessions for people with limited mobility and visual or hearing impairments, providing an alternative space and additional accessibility aids. If you have specific needs, please contact us before booking: we strive to make this experience accessible to everyone. What's included - Masterclasses taught by Paca and Baltasar. - All workshop materials. - Tasting of rustic paella cooked over a wood fire with a glass of wine.- Public liability insurance. Good to know: Duration: Half day (morning). Group size: 6 to 16 people. Language: The workshop is conducted in Spanish. We can offer support in English with a translator and visual materials (please inquire when booking). Transportation: Not included. Goatherd for a day
Juan is a fourth-generation shepherd and cheesemaker who has dedicated his life to protecting the Payoya goat, an endangered native Andalusian breed, and preserving the Sierra Crestellina mountain range. At Quesería Crestellina in Casares, he transforms his goats' milk into cheese using traditional, organic methods, just as his family has done for nearly a century. For one morning, he opens the doors to his daily life, allowing you to experience rural life firsthand: with your hands, at a relaxed pace, and through stories worth hearing. What you'll experienceYou'll spend a morning as one of the family at Crestellina, truly experiencing farm life:- You'll get to know the Payoya goats up close and, if you're up for it, try the traditional milking process before they head out to pasture in the mountains. - You'll visit the farm in the heart of the Sierra Crestellina, a stunning landscape less than half an hour from the sea, where it's not uncommon to see eagles and vultures soaring above the mountains. - You'll make your own fresh cheese using Juan's family recipe and shape it with your personal touch to take home.- You'll finish with a tasting of different cheeses, engaging all five senses, accompanied by a good local wine. While the milk curdles and the magic happens, Juan will tell you stories about his mountains and how his family arrived in these lands almost a hundred years ago. More than a visit, it's a morning experiencing the countryside as it was lived in the past. Your guide:Juan Ocaña is the fourth generation at the helm of Crestellina and the heart and soul of everything that happens here. He learned the trade through daily experience, in the rural university that surrounds him, and today he maintains the same recipes his ancestors used. His commitment to organic, honest, and low-impact production earned Crestellina the Kilómetro Cero Gastronomic Club's Best Producer award in 2022. But what visitors truly take away is his warm and fun way of sharing what he does. A story that tastes like cheese. Here, every cheese carries a story within it. Juan's great-grandmother used to cross to Gibraltar to barter cheese for cocoa, coffee, or grain, returning with saddlebags full of seawater, which she used to salt and preserve the cheeses. That same recipe, that same care, is still alive today in Crestellina, passed down from generation to generation. AccessibilityWe believe that culture is a right, not a privilege. Access to the workshop is available for wheelchair users; access to the goat pens is more limited, but for people with reduced mobility, we offer alternatives to see and get to know the Payoya goats up close. The experience is suitable for people with visual and hearing impairments. If you have specific needs, please write to us before booking: we make every effort to ensure this experience is accessible to everyone. What's included- The cheese-making workshop with Juan and making your own cheese to take home. - The visit to the Payoya goat farm in the heart of the Sierra Crestellina. - Tasting of different cheeses and local wine. - Public liability insurance.Good to knowDuration: Half day (morning), approximately 3 hours. Group size: 5 to 16 people. Language: The experience is offered in Spanish or English (English translation available). Transportation: Not included. We can arrange transportation from Malaga upon request. Book your morning in Crestellina and take home more than just a cheese you've made yourself: the living history of a family and their mountain range.

Snorkelling with Alberto: knowing the sea to protect it
There's a whole world just a few metres from the shore, and we almost never look at it. Alberto Ramos has spent his entire life connected to the sea —as a teacher, surfer, professional diver and diving instructor— and, through Senderos Marinos, he has explored and mapped the Málaga coast to show what others overlook. On this snorkel outing he guides you along one of his marine trails: he tells you its story, introduces you to the species that live there, and teaches you to see the sea in a different way. What you'll experienceAn outing of around 2 to 3 hours, designed so anyone can enjoy it, whether you're experienced or not:- You'll begin on land, with an introduction to the trail and instructions on how to move safely and with respect for the environment.- You'll head into the water with Alberto to follow the marine trail just below the surface, discovering its flora, its fauna and, in some places, its submerged historical heritage.- Along the way you might come across shoals of fish, octopuses, seagrass meadows and rock formations that hide more life than you'd imagine.- You'll finish back on land with a refreshing drink, sharing what you've just experienced.Your hostAlberto Ramos is the founder of Senderos Marinos (Sema Entornos) and the person who'll be with you in the water. Alberto has experience supporting people with specific needs and functional diversity. Every case is different, so we'll talk through together what you need to enjoy the experience in the best possible way.
