Santander is a beautiful coastal city in northern Spain, the capital of the autonomous community of Cantabria. It sits on one of the most beautiful bays in the world, giving it a unique landscape where the Cantabrian Sea meets the verdant mountains. At the beginning of the 20th century, it became a favorite summer destination for the Spanish royal family (King Alfonso XIII and Queen Victoria Eugenie), which transformed the city and left it with elegant, stately architecture and a distinctly aristocratic air. It's a small city, very easy to explore on foot, famous for its excellent seafood (you must try the fried calamari) and its pleasant Atlantic climate in the summer.
